About Me
Hello! My name is Sophie Wilkins and I am an English Language teacher from the UK. I have been teaching English as a foreign language for nearly 10 years. I have experience working with all ages and levels, from primary school children to adult business professionals. I am currently based in Edinburgh, Scotland where I teach one-on-one and small group online English classes.
I first began my teaching career in Japan on The JET Programme and have lived and worked in five different countries since then. I taught A-Level English in Singapore for one year, then returned to teaching English as a second language in the UK. I completed my CELTA in Leeds, England and went on to teach adults at Leeds English Language School. I then spent four years teaching ESL at a primary school in Hong Kong, where I completed my Trinity Diploma in TESOL. After that, I spent 18 months teaching English at the British Council in Madrid, where I also led teacher training sessions. I am currently undertaking an academic masters in transformative education at Moray House (University of Edinburgh).
I love communicating and learning with people from around the world. My teaching method is based on communication: I believe that students should speak as much as possible during a lesson. I facilitate progression through ongoing assessment and providing support and scaffolds to help students develop and build confidence, fluency and accuracy.
Outside the classroom, I love reading and I am also interested in learning languages. I am currently studying German and Spanish. My knowledge of other languages has improved my practise as a language teacher.

My methodology for online classes is exactly the same for one-on-one classes taught face-to-face. My lessons are personalised and adapted to suit the needs of each student. I focus on improving communicative skills through speaking and listening, as well as focusing on developing knowledge of grammar, vocabulary and improving reading and writing skills.

Small Groups
From £15 per person for 1 hour
Group lessons are perfect for making learning more interactive. They are also great value for money. Students learn in small groups of up to four students focusing on developing communication skills and reaching common goals. Please get in touch for more information about this service.
Online
£15 for 30 minutes
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, all lessons are currently taught online. Online English allows you to fit lessons into your day without wasting time or money on travelling. You can choose to learn from the comfort of your home, office or even on holiday! Learning on Zoom means that you can speak English anywhere, anytime.

MSc Transformative Learning and Teaching
2019 - 2021
I am currently undertaking an academic masters and professional qualification to teach in Scotland. I am training as an English Specialist with a future-orientated approach to education, addressing local and global challenges.
Trinity Diploma
2016
The Trinity Diploma in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is an internationally recognised and respected advanced qualification in teaching English for more experienced teachers. I completed my Diploma in August 2016 while working in Hong Kong. I was awarded Distinction for my research portfolio on Young Learners.
CELTA
2013
The Cambridge Exams CELTA course provides teachers with the essential skills and knowledge to teach English. I was delighted to be awarded a Pass A (Distinction) on completing the course. Only 5% of candidates are rewarded a Pass A for excellent understanding of English language learning and teaching processes.
M.A. in English Literature
2010
I graduated from the University of Glasgow in 2010 with a Master of Arts in English Literature. My love of language and interest in English inspired me to pursue a career in English teaching.
